Hokkaido

At first, I knew little to nothing about Japan, but looking at a map I was excited to travel all the main island by bike. This didn't happen, instead I went on a couple of journeys, one of which was to Hokkaido (the northern most island)

The first trip to Hokkaido was the first serious journey my bike had been on, and the first adventure Yuriko & I had been on together, & we loved it.  All in all we traveled from west to east, then north to south for 3 weeks, exploring mountains, rivers, lakes forests & of course onsens, lots of outside, natural onsens! In between all this it was fun trying to find shelter and water every night. Hokkaido reminded me a bit of home, lots of cows, tractors and & a healthy sense of difference by the `islanders`.

Like Tasmania, Hokkaido produces a lot of the mainlands food, broad acre farming and lots of arable land. Above: konbu on the coast of Raosu sun drying on the rocks, in every meal at Japanese dinner time (as soup or accompaniment to rice). Below: Mariko, an agricultural student we met for dinner before she loaded us up with prime organic veggies to sustain our energy levels.
